THE ULTIMATE
It is my second week going to my hitting instructor. I was really trying to focus on my goal this week and remember where I want to be at the end of these 12 weeks. I know this will be hard and I will mess up but I keep telling myself that I can do it and I can push myself to be where I need to be at the end of these 12 weeks.
When I got there we started talking about what I did wrong the previous week. I was dropping my elbow which was causing the ball to go up and be a pop fly which I am wanting more of a line drive. My hitting instructor showed me how my swing needs to be to fix that, he said it will take some time to get this new swing down. Then once he showed me he put the tee out for me to hit off of. I was practicing this new swing. After I got done hitting off the tee, he said he was going to pitch to me. He said he did not want me to change anything about my swing going from the tee to him pitching with me. For some reason I started hitting the ball back up again I was getting aggravated. He kept telling me just to remember what he said and we would keep working on it. He said something like this does not just come easy and that I have to work not only with him but at home like in my back yard or at my other softball practices. He said to remember what he has told me when I am at these other practices. He said we are going to work really hard on week 3 and I will eventually get there.

This was my first week of going to hit with my mentor. When I got there he told me what drills we were going to do. We first started hitting off a tee. Then he started throwing me soft toss and he was telling me what I needed to do to correct my swing. He said I was dropping my elbow which was causing the ball to go up and be a pop fly. Which is basically the opposite of what I want, I want it to be more of a line drive. After we got done throwing soft toss, he then threw live pitching to me.
I think getting pitched to live by either my coach in the batting cage or getting pitched to by one of my players on my team on the field is my favorite things because it is like your in a game and you can really see what your doing wrong. Every time I have gone to him I have never videoed myself but for this project, I am videoing myself. I think videoing myself will help me better see what I am doing wrong and how I can correct it. If I video myself every week for these 12 weeks I will really see how I have improved. Learning this new swing I think will be pretty stressful on me because I am not always sure what my coach is telling me that I did wrong. Then when I do understand what I am doing wrong, it takes time to correct it. I get aggravated because I can not just get the hang of it the first time I do it. I have to work not just every week I go see my mentor but also at my other softball practices out on the field. When I am out on the field I have to think of what my coach would be telling me if I were in the batting cage with him. I think this project will take a lot of work to change my swing and it will be aggravating at times. But that will be the time where I overcome and really push myself to where I really need to be. For genius hour I am doing my project on a new swing for softball. It will be a 12 week process and I am going to my mentor every week. My mentor is Spencer Runge. He has been my hitting instructor for awhile now and he was just recently my travel softball coach. Things I am going to work on for hitting is a new swing. This new swing will help me to place the ball better, meaning I will become a more accurate hitter. If I get told to hit an outside pitch to right field I will be able to do so. Hitting an outside pitch is one of my worst weaknesses. That is the main thing I will be focusing on in these next 12 weeks but I will also be working on hitting an inside pitch too. Over these 12 weeks, I will go hit once a week. Each lesson I have with my coach I will video myself hitting each week. In these videos I will then describe what I did right or wrong that week and what I improved on. Just looking at the video if you don't know softball you won't know what I am doing wrong, describing what i'm doing right or wrong will help people understand the sport and little things you can do to improve and help you become a better player. |
